Kind of Disturbing

Kate has decided that since she's a big girl now, what with being in Pre-K and all, she should have a bra. Aunt Jo Jo got her one, asking her "Kate, do you know what 'indulgent' means?" Some weeks back Aunt Jo Jo asked Kate if she's spoiled, to which Kate replied "Yes. Spoiled is fabulous." Anyway, Kate's been wearing the thing all over the place, it's creepy, yet somehow amusing.

Moving on. Both Kate and Sarah like to chew on ice. Hopefully this is not a sign that they're anemic. Yesterday Kate had pulled a stool up to the freezer and was pushing the lever in the door to get lots and lots and lots of ice. It was spilling out of her cup and all over the floor. "Let's pick all that up" I said "otherwise the floor is going to end up all wet." As I was saying it, it occurred to me that Kate might not know why leaving ice on the floor would cause it to become wet. "Do you know what ice is?" I asked her. She just blinked at me. "Ice, " I explained, picking a piece up in my hand and showing it to her "is water that's been frozen solid. Frozen means it's really really really cold. When ice starts to warm up, it turns back into water..." to make my point I'd been gripping the ice hard in my hand, I opened up my hand to show her. "See? My hand is all wet now, that's because the ice warmed up, or melted, in it." She gave a succinct nod and a "huh!" Then she climbed off her stool and took cup of ice out on the porch where she and Sarah were having dinner.

I went about doing what I'd been doing and a minute later when I walked past the door to the porch I heard Kate saying "Sarah, ice is water that's been frozen. That means it's cold..." Sweet little teacher. I guess she really is a big girl now.

You don't get a whole bunch of Instant Gratification Moments in the parenting racket. Awesome story.

Now that she's wearing bras and stuff, it's probably time to start introducing doubt about her weight.

Wow. That beats my first bra story. It was the day before valentines day and my mom let me pick out my own V-day gift at Kmart. I selected Heart's self titled LP. The next morning my brother opened up his gift: MY Heart record. Baffled, I opened my gift to find a friggin bra. I went to my room and cried while my brother was singing along to "What about Love".
BTW, I did notice that Kate's bumpies were looking sloppy last time I saw her. Its about time you got her a bra.

You see, Aunt So-So, this is why we don't celebrate Valentine's Day at our house. No one here wants to be made to listen to Heart.

Aw, I like Heart. I blame my poor taste in music on the fact that I was raised by refugees. I also like Kiss and various country acts from the 70s.

Between the pictures of my little girl in a bra and the reference to Heart's s/t album, this might be the most disturbing post ever. Plus, the part about your brother is totally gay, although I do recall a certain brother of mine owning that cassette...

Chris never mentioned owning that tape to me. I wonder what else I don't know. Do you think Kate is too young for implants? I think she could fill that thing out a little better. I agree...this is the most disturbing post ever.

Well I have a "first bra" story to share. No not MY first bra. It was LMP's first bra. Her other brothers and I are having breakfast in the kitchen before school and in comes Mom, all serious and, well, somewhat mellow dramatic (Mom? No!) and she says something like "now boys, your little sister is wearing a bra to school today for the first time so don't harass her (...what? Us harass?...) because she is probably very sensitive about it. It'd be best not to even mention it at all" she says. And I'm thinking, you know, "...whatever, Mom." And then, as if on cue, in walks my little sister and, with her arms wide, announces to the whole kitchen, God, and everyone "Mommmm (with a least two syllables) you can see my BRA right THROUGH THIS SWEATER!!"

You were right, Mom, she's very very sensitive.

PS - Aunt So-So, Heart had lots of GREAT music. However, ALL of it was LONG before that crappy self titled album (I can't WAIT to ask Chris about him owning the cassette).

On the other hand, I really like the notion of shuffling KISS and various country acts from the '70s. Sheer genius! Where's my iPod...
